Victim Watch Africa: Khulumani Expresses Deep Concern about Reports of the Escalation of Political Violence in Zimbabwe

Written by

The latest issue of ZIGWatch (the Zimbabwe Inclusive Government Watch), dated 21 November 2011, reports that organised, large-scale politically motivated violence continues to escalate at a worrying level.

It is alleged in these reports that the violence is being planned and perpetrated by members of Zanu-PF and the armed forces under instruction from the highest levels, and is aimed not just at their partners in the GPA, but also at the general populace in these months ahead of the national elections planned for 2012.

There is evidence of the deliberate use of violence to build a climate of fear, with members of "opposition" parties having to face continuous legal harassment, with marches and demonstrations being banned or blocked by the police, even when approved by the courts. Commentators believe that the violence and harassment is designed to intimidate the electorate prior to elections planned for next year.

Khulumani expresses deep concern about the long-term impacts of Zimbabwe’s political violence on Zimbabwean citizens and on the people of the region. Khulumani supports the call that “Enough is enough”. Khulumani calls for effective action by JOMIC to prevent and to contain the escalation of political violence in Zimbabwe.
