Khulumani’s NSC Leaves Johannesburg for Durban to Join the Global Day of Action Against Climate Change at COP 17

Written by

At 13:00 today, Khulumani’s delegation comprising representatives from Khulumani groups in all South Africa’s provinces, departed from Park Station, Johannesburg to arrive in Durban in time to join tomorrow’s C17 Global Day of Action (GDA) on Climate Change.

GDA Committee Convenor from South Durban Environmental Action, Desmond D’sa has said, “World leaders are discussing the fate of our planet but they are far from reaching a solution to climate change. If they fail to make progress we will see drought and hunger blight our country and continent even further. We call on all South African’s to march with us this Saturday and remind our leaders they must come to a fair climate change deal that avoids runaway climate change.”

Marchers will set out from King Dinuzulu Garden where they will be addressed by South African and international community representatives.

Outside the Durban International Conference Centre, the site of the United Nations climate change negotiations, the march will converge with the march of faith communities from Diakonia Centre, where speakers including COSATU’s General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, Nnimmo Bassey as a representative of African civil society, Bishop Geoff Davies as a representative of faith communities, Aluwani Nemukula representing youth and Constance Mogale representing women, will address the gathering before statements gathered from participating groups and organisations are collectively handed over to UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres.
