The group will learn about Khulumani's use of comic art to unlock dialogue for building intergenerational relationships, the development of social cinema involving young people being trained as citizen journalists and film makers who then screen their films in public spaces to provide alternative forms of engagement and entertainment for young people in under-resourced townships, and the steps in hosting a participatory arts festival.
The workshop will learn of the struggle for quality education in the Eastern Cape and of the role and significance of history in contributing to understanding and solving community problems. They will then participate in a workshop to learn how to become a pantsula performer before taking a walk through the living history of Fingo township and through the 1819 Battle of Makana battlefield when the Xhosa people put up a proud resistance to the expansion of the colonial government across the Eastern Cape.
The visit will conclude with a guided tour of the 1820 Settlers' Monument and Fort Selwyn, the prototype of British forts that were erected along the frontier, concluding with a visit to the National English Literary Museum and a music performance by WORDSUNTAMED.
