TRC logoThe TRC failed to address the consequences of political violence and human rights violations for many people. 90% of Khulumani's members who are gross human rights survivors, were not included in the processes of the TRC.

For some this was due to a technical era; others had their claims rejected; others need to appeal apparent mistakes that were made in the administrative processes of the TRC.

The TRC failed to address the consequences of political violence and human rights violations for many people. 90% of Khulumani's members who are gross human rights survivors, were not included in the processes of the TRC.

For some this was due to a technical era; others had their claims rejected; others need to appeal apparent mistakes that were made in the administrative processes of the TRC.

All of these individuals turn to Khulumani Support Group for assistance to appeal and to access support from government. Government continues to hold an obligation towards traumatised citizens in the long-term goal of achieving the restoration of their dignity and reconciliation.Khulumani is pursuing these issues with government to facilitate some longer-term arrangement to address the needs of victims post-TRC.

While government has stated publicly that the past has been buried, the country and its citizens continue to live with the consequences of apartheid. Without structured interventions, victims do not successfully put together their broken lives and remain unable to move on in their lives and to overcome poverty.

Khulumani hosts a weekly Post-TRC Advocacy Working Group comprising its various stakeholders and partners, in its offices. Khulumani has planned to reconvene a series of hearings in areas of the country where many human rights violations took place without these places being reached by the TRC. The opportunity to publicly tell one's story and to have it acknowledged begins a journey of healing for deeply traumatised individuals.
