SA MapKhulumani currently has provincial offices in 7 provinces. Mpumalanga and Northern Cape are the remaining 2 provinces in which Khulumani has not officially established its presence although it has active members in these provinces. For national reconciliation and healing to occur throughout South Africa, Khulumani's work must be extended to these regions.

Each province should ideally be equipped with an office, a computer, a coordinator and a secretary who would receive stipends.

The initial funding for these offices would be needed and ongoing local funding would be then obtained to maintain these offices.

Our provincial structures are of utmost importance to our grassroots work. Our provincial structures feed into our bi-annual national steering committee meetings. At these committee meetings we focus on victim empowerment programmes and capacity building.

In 'training the trainer' our 33 000 membership benefit in terms of a shift in the power relations of our members in relation to their integration back into society.

Khulumani's capacity is found within its 33 000 membership. The local and regional groups have each elected a provincial coordinator and a secretary to represent them on the national steering committee which meets bi annually.

This provides the forum for 'train the trainer' activities of provincial representatives in areas determined by the information gathered from the detailed needs assessment forms that all members have completed for our extensive database.

The capacity building programme centres on strengthening the work of Khulumani's provincial offices through strategic planning activities and monitoring and review of work done by local groups and their committees.

The Steering Committee members received training in managing their bookkeeping in line with the requirements of the national Office and as determined by the organisation's finance officer.

Provincial office-bearers also need training in fundraising and victim empowerment activities in the following areas: counselling, reconciliation and healing, memorialisation and sustainable development.

The organisation's National Steering Committee is the ideal forum for sharing information, for training provincial representatives and for deepening democratic practices.
