| | In the wake of Adrian Vlok's footwashing apology, it has emerged that a growing number of black former apartheid security police agents are approaching a support group formed to help perpetrators of atrocities to seek atonement. Marjorie Jobson, acting director of the Khulumani Support Group, said most of those who contacted her organisation were channelling their guilt by making the first steps to reconcile with survivors and their families. Many were concentrated in the East Rand. |

| | | Shirley Gunn and her baby son spent more than two months in prison after former police minister Adriaan Vlok falsely accused her of bombing the headquarters of the SA Council of Churches. Now, 17 years after her ordeal, Gunn has slammed Vlok's foot-washing apology to the Director-General of the Presidency, Frank Chikane, the former secretary-general of the SACC, as "provocative and insensitive". Gunn said: "I still haven't got the truth out of (Vlok) about what happened to me. He can't just wash Frank Chikane's feet and think that that is the end of it ... he needs to apologise to his victims directly." |

| | The struggle against apartheid created many heroes, whose sacrifices then have now become their legacy. Many of the "liberation before education" generation today find themselves unemployable and living in poverty. Shirley Gunn, of the Human Rights Media Centre, said many people who played a tremendous role in defeating apartheid had now been abandoned. Their stories have not been forgotten though and will be told in an exhibition called "Breaking the Silence: A Luta Continua" at the Iziko Slave Lodge in Adderley Street. |

Unfinished business |
| A decade after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) started its work, many South African communities are still recovering from the brutal conflicts it tried to cauterise. Victim advocates insist real reconciliation will not happen while the practical concerns of survivors and perpetrators remain unaddressed. “This is quite close to the surface of the national psyche and is present in communities up and down the country,” says Piers Pigou, a former TRC investigator. |

Tutu voices fears over apartheid prosecutions |
| | Former chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Desmond Tutu says he has doubts over the prospects of success in looming prosecutions of apartheid-era perpetrators of gross human rights. "I worry that we ... could quite easily set ourselves up where you have cases that go on for a long time, that evoke all kinds of emotion, then the people are acquitted," he told a panel discussion in Cape Town on Thursday night on the 10th anniversary of the first TRC hearing. |

| | | A vigil will be held in Cape Town on Tuesday night by victims of apartheid, as their lawyers possibly adjourn for a lunch-break while arguing a reparations lawsuit in a New York appeal court. "The positive outcome of this [the vigil] is to show that there is support on the ground for the lawsuit in South Africa," said Shirley Gunn, of the Khulumani support group, which represents the plaintiffs, but has a membership of more than 44 000. |
