The case seeks to hold these powerful corporations accountable for aiding and abetting the perpetration of gross human rights violations by providing military and other equipment that was used by the apartheid security agencies to violently suppress widespread resistance to apartheid by the people.
The corporations failed to heed the embargoes put in place through many resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly.
Khulumani's US attorney, Mr Michael Hausfeld has led the civil litigation on behalf of Khulumani Support Group. Michael was recently honoured for his lifelong commitment to the advancement of human and civil rights, especially in the service of 'righting human wrongs and advancing justice and dignity to those who can be counted amongst the victims of the most extreme abuses of human rights in the world.'
See Khulumani's statement on this award.
Khulumani deeply appreciates the critical work which Michael has spearheaded over many years of seeking justice for victims of historical crimes. We celebrate his latest achievement as we await the outcome of the Kiobel hearing at the US Supreme Court of Appeal that will determine whether victims of apartheid crimes will finally get their day in court.
Thank you Michael for standing with us in this decade of struggle.
