Khulumani Sebokeng hosts Khulumani's Commemoration of National Youth Day 2011

Written by  Wiseman Nduli

On the 16th of June 2011, Khulumani's Youth commemorated National Youth Day in Sebokeng, Gauteng. This report is by Khulumani Youth activist, Wiseman Nduli. That same day eTV opened its broadcast with an interview with Simphiwe Shabalala, another Khulumani youth activist. Read Wiseman's report below.

Welcoming words by Mrs Mokoena

I would like to thank everyone who made it today. This is a very emotional day to us especially as victims of apartheid and members of KSG. I would also like to thank the youth. I can see that their attendance is very good. Lately I realised that KSG is the only organisation that makes the victims of apartheid to unite like this. I would take that as one of our achievements because gathering like this really healed us. I lost my husband during apartheid era through struggle but now I'm healed because of KSG. I think youth of today their are losing direction by involving themselves in drugs, I wish they can learn from the youth of 1976 - youth who raised their voices to fight against the apartheid government. Most families lost their loved ones for us to get freedom. I also thank the staff members of KSG for taking our issues very seriously and Marje who made this day successful even though we didn't have fund for this event but she made this day possible and i know she is fully with us without her presence. Thank you.

Speaker on behalf of the youth by Tisetso

We thank KSG a lots for giving us this opportunity. We were worried that Sebokeng is not going to participate in any celebration of the youth day but KSG made it possible to have an event in our area.(crying) This day is very important to me. It reminds me on what we went through. I don't have both parents because of the struggle but I am glad because today they are part of our history. Even though I lost them when I was very young, I think we all know that it is very hard to grow up without parents. It hurts a lots to see our brothers and sisters drinking alcohol on this day while the events are all over South Africa. They are acting as if they don't know what we went through.

KSG members along with the youth they started singing and dancing. They also made it clear that they have their song for KSG which they sing when they meet for different workshops and other activities which goes like this "SIBATSHELILE WEMA UKUTHI IYEZA I KHULUMANI"

I’m very proud because I participated a lots to make this day successful and I'm very happy to meet Sebokeng victims for the first time. The management and other staff members they couldn’t be with us today due to other commitments but without their support we couldn’t make it. I'm very happy to work with Khulumani because each and everyday I learn something new. Thanks a lots to everyone who attended today that shows very well that we salute our heroes of 1976.

KSG Angels they started performing- traditional dance and poetry

Speaker on behalf of the Sebokeng victims by Basi Mohajana

I'm glad to meet other victims once again. What I know about the victims is that we are very strong mentally and also physically even though we are getting old. I was shot during struggle and I lost my eye sight. Until today I can’t see anything. But we still contributing in the community because we are  helping orphans to get their birth certificates. I'm very happy to get the opportunity to have a say on such an important day.

KSG Angels performed a Gumboot dance. The victims seemed to be happy as they were shouting very loudly after the performance. They all stood up singing the slogan - VIVA KHULUMANI VIVA.

Closure by Mrs Mokoena and the word of thanks.

Participants shared refreshments.

The youth continued to share the stage to show their different talents.
