The views of former South African Robi Damelin were sought about the likely release of the sniper whose bullet killed her son at a checkpoint between Palestine and Israel in 2002.

Robi is involved in the production of a film in which her own story is told in parallel with the story of Khulumani Mamelodi member, Mrs Maria Ntuli, whose son Jeremiah was abducted through security police activity and was killed with nine other young student activists at the remote Nietverdiend Villlage near the Botswana border.

Khulumani looks forward to the release of that film, hopefully later this year.

Jeremiah was one of ten young men who were injected with an agent that caused them to lose consciousness. After losing consciousness, all ten young men were assassinated. Their bodies were returned to the kombi in which they had travelled and the vehicle was set alight. The case has been one in which the burned remains were eventually identified using DNA technology.

The agent used had been produced in the laboratory of disgraced medical doctor, Dr Wouter Basson at the time that he headed the infamous Project Coast. Khulumani is watching the disciplinary hearing of Dr Wouter Basson with great interest. The hearing is considering the removal of Dr Wouter Basson from the register of the South African Health Professions Council on grounds that he acted unethically in using his medical knowledge to contribute to the elimination of young black activists who were considered a threat to the apartheid state.

The hearing lasted five days during September 2011 and  will recommence in January 2012. Khulumani has noted that Dr Basson has been accompanied at the hearing by his son who is the age of the 19 youth activists from mamelodi township who were murdered by state agents in 1986 and 1987 because of their involvement in COSAS at the time.
