Guilty verdict for vandalising the memorial statue of Nokuthula Simelane

Yesterday the Bethal Magistrate's Court handed down a guilty judgment in the case in which the 25-year old Bethal resident Cornelius van Tonder, was found guilty of vandalising the memorial statue of Nokuthula Simelane, a youth activist from the local township who was forcibly disappeared by apartheid agents in the 1980s.

Nokuthula was only 2 years younger than van Tonder at the time of her disappearance. Khulumani submitted a request to the National Prosecuting Authority for the charge of 'crimen injuria' to be added to the charge sheet in recognition that the statue symbolised for Nokuthula's loving family their only connection to a daughter & sister whom they have never buried and whom they can only assume to have been murdered by apartheid agents.

Khulumani hopes that this judgment may serve as a step in the shared recognition of the immense cost paid by  courageous young activists in the struggle for 'justice and freedom'.
