On Saturday, 19 May 2012, the first of Khulumani's Forum Theatre Troupes met for the first time with Project Officer, Forum Theatre Director for Africa, Mr Mohamadou Diol at the Emndeni Children's Home in Soweto.
This first group of some 20 young people from Soweto will be trained over the coming three months on four days of each week in the hall of the Orlando West YMCA in Soweto. The first group is being funded by AusAID.
Diol is from Senegal and said "this is great opportunity for me to work with young people from Khulumani and to work at Soweto because Soweto is a symbolic place.
I'm looking forward to making my own contribition to the group". Diol has performed in many countries across Africa and the world, including in Austria,Brazil and Mauritania.
The group has grown to 35 young people. The group will participate in a Khulumani activity on National Youth Day in Soweto on June 16 in support of the Makhubu family's appeal for an investigation into the disappearance of their brother, Mbuyisa, who was photographed carrying the body of Hector Pieterson in Mr Sam Nzima's famous photograph.
